Simone Biles is fed up with the criticism directed at her husband, Jonathan Owens.
Following her decisive victory at the U.S. Classic on Saturday, Biles took to her Instagram story to address the ongoing scrutiny of her relationship. Owens had been present at the event, enthusiastically cheering her on in Hartford, Connecticut.
“I need to set the record straight. What started as a joke was never meant to be taken lightly! Some of you are blatantly disrespecting my marriage and my husband,” Biles wrote on Sunday. “So let me make this crystal clear once and for all. Respectfully, back off.
“If you persist in leaving comments or tweets directed at me, I’ll simply block you. It’s as simple as that,” she added. “And no, I don’t need to ‘get some fresh air’ or whatever else you may suggest…”
The message likely stems from the backlash Owens has faced regarding his comments on how he and Biles met. Speaking on the podcast “The Pivot,” Owens admitted he wasn’t familiar with Biles before they started dating in 2020 and jokingly referred to himself as “the catch” in their relationship. These remarks drew criticism, especially considering Biles’ status as one of the most accomplished athletes in history.
Biles addressed the ensuing controversy during an episode of the podcast “Call Her Daddy” in April. Initially finding the backlash amusing, she later confessed that the comments had deeply hurt her.
“I found it initially funny, but it ultimately became hurtful,” Biles revealed. “I couldn’t understand where the negativity was coming from, especially towards someone as kind and supportive as Jonathan.”
Expressing her dismay at the disparagement directed at her husband, Biles emphasized the importance of protecting her family from unwarranted criticism.
“That really hit me hard, seeing them talk about my husband like that. Criticize me all you want, but don’t you dare target my family. Never,” she asserted.
Biles and Owens tied the knot in April 2023 and have been staunch supporters of each other’s professional endeavors. While Owens has been there to cheer Biles on as she prepares for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Biles has reciprocated by attending Owens’ games during the 2023 NFL season, when he played for the Green Bay Packers. Owens recently signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Bears in March.
