June marks Pride Month, and cities across the U.S. are preparing for a plethora of parades, events, and celebrations honoring the LGBTQ+ community, its history, and its ongoing fight for equality.
Pride Month pays homage to the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York, a pivotal moment credited with catalyzing LGBTQ+ activism in the United States.
Among the prominent Pride celebrations is Washington, D.C., which hosts one of the largest festivities in the country. This year, the theme is “Totally Radical,” reflecting the spirit of the event.
For those planning to attend the Capital Pride Parade in Washington, D.C., here’s what you need to know:
When is the Capital Pride Parade?
The Capital Pride Parade is set for Saturday, June 8, running from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
What is the parade route?
This year, there’s a new parade route. It will not pass through the Dupont neighborhood.
The block party remains on 17th Street, with a designated family area at Stead Park.
Parade participants will assemble on 15th Street NW between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
The parade will commence at 14th Street at T Street NW at 3 p.m.
The 1.8-mile route follows 14th Street NW, circles around Thomas Circle, and concludes at Pennsylvania Avenue at 9th Street NW.
How can you watch the parade?
If you’re attending in person, you can view the parade from the sidelines free of charge. NBC Washington suggests optimal viewing spots on the west side of Franklin Park and intersections at New York and Rhode Island avenues NW.
Although general admission to a designated area near the Parade Review Stand is sold out, you can still gain access by making a suggested donation of $5-10.
Additionally, grandstand bleacher seats are available on Freedom Plaza for $25.
