During a House Oversight Committee markup session on Thursday night, tensions flared between Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., after Greene made a derogatory comment about Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, regarding her appearance, specifically mentioning her “fake eyelashes.”
The clash erupted amid discussions on whether to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt for withholding audio recordings of President Joe Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur. Hur’s report earlier in the year had described Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory.”
At one juncture, Greene questioned Democrats about the employment of Loren Merchan, daughter of Judge Juan Merchan overseeing former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial. Loren Merchan runs a digital advertising agency that collaborates with Democratic candidates, drawing scrutiny from Trump allies.
In response to Crockett’s inquiry about the purpose of the session, Greene retorted, suggesting Crockett was distracted by her appearance, specifically mentioning her “fake eyelashes.”
Ocasio-Cortez swiftly condemned Greene’s remarks, calling them “absolutely unacceptable,” and demanding an apology. Greene challenged Ocasio-Cortez, but their exchange escalated, with Greene refusing to apologize and Ocasio-Cortez questioning Greene’s intelligence.
Efforts by Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., to restore order were unsuccessful as the debate between Greene and Ocasio-Cortez continued. Ultimately, the committee voted to advance contempt proceedings against Garland.
